💯 Prioritizing security when creating, buying, selling, and storing NFTs is a must. You should take care of your wallets (and everything in them) the same way you take care of your bank account.
🔓 Security is hard. Even the most sophisticated crypto users can be susceptible to bad actors, scams, malware, device compromise, account compromise, and loss of assets and funds. You can know everything and still get hacked.
🤓 Stay educated and aware of the digital landscapes you interact with most often to adapt and avoid scams. Scammers will target common crypto platforms and mediums like Twitter, Discord, MetaMask, and OpenSea to try and facilitate scams and account takeovers. Email is the most common vehicle for phishing campaigns.
‼️Official support accounts will NEVER ask for your seed/recovery phrases or private keys. Do not engage if you are even slightly unsure. If it feels weird, it probably is. Trust your gut!
Some Wallet Basics
- Software wallet - a digital wallet that stores your NFTs and cryptocurrency. Ex: Metamask. This is what you use to purchase, send, and store assets in your possession
- Hardware wallet - an offline, physical wallet that allows you to store your private keys in a secure physical device
- Seed phrase - 12-24 word phrase that allows access to your wallet from any device. This is the key to your entire wallet
- Private key - each account in a wallet has its own private key that can be used to import that account and that account only to a different wallet
- Private key QR code - a simpler representation of the private key that is not human-readable
Things You Can Do to Keep Safe
- Protect your passwords
- Enable 2FA on all accounts
- Protect your seed/recovery phrase offline and make more than one copy. Split the phrase in half and store it in two separate locations. Ex: if your recovery phrase is 12 words, write the first 6 words on a piece of paper, and write the second 6 words on a separate piece of paper. Store these separately in a safe and secure location
- Use a secure hardware wallet
- Keep your browsers and OS up to date
- Verify sender email addresses before replying or sharing any information
